Let’s begin by talking about the thyroid. Your thyroid is a tiny gland located in your neck that plays a large role in your health.
It’s involved in essential functions like:
At the same time, the thyroid produces its hormones using iodine. You need iodine for this process, but the relationship between the thyroid and iodine requires perfect balance. Too much iodine and things can go awry.
Why?
Because iodine is complicated.
At a superficial level, it is easy to think that our thyroid needs iodine to thrive. Iodine is not the bad guy here, but it takes understanding the complex role of iodine.
The main thing you want to understand is that it is far too easy to get too much iodine. A few (and I mean literally a few) people get too little. It’s the Goldilocks mineral.
Yes, you need it!
And chances are, that no matter where in the world you are living, you are most likely getting too much.
This can have a huge impact on your health and can lead to and make thyroid disease worse.
Key Insight: There is a bit of a “Goldilocks conundrum” with iodine – you need to make sure that you get it just right, but it is way too easy to get too much.
As we talk about the Thyroid Reset Diet, keep these three things in mind:
Many studies have shown that between 60-80% of people can fully reverse thyroid disease within three months, by following an iodine-regulating plan.

The best part is that the guidelines are simple. They are built around the main goal of regulating iodine and covering other bases that help improve thyroid function.
While somewhere between 60 to 80 percent is a great start, that remaining percentage still included folks who were improving but hadn’t fully improved yet.
Key Insight: Of those who followed guidelines and reached their targets, we would be looking at 95-97% of people who have seen some kind of major benefit to their health and lives.

The study came about because we have known forever that a massive overdose of iodine can trigger thyroid disease. We have recently learned that the people genetically prone to thyroid disease, involve genes related to iodine metabolism.
You control how those work by controlling your iodine intake. There exists a safe range from between 50-200 micrograms of iodine, per day, that you can easily stay within and keep things from going wrong.

Why do we see so much thyroid disease now?
Before iodine fortification, thyroid disease in the United States was rare. Once that started in 1924, the rates of thyroid disease amongst women in their 30s and 40s went up 25,000fold. It became incredibly common and has continued to grow since then.
We have seen similar results in other countries, too. While it has helped reduce the instances of goiter in children, it has become correlated with increased adult thyroid disease.
Key Insight: Around 30-40% of the population in the US has overt iodine excess (above 200 micrograms per day). This goes to show how easy it is to get too much.
